Xi Jinping Calls for Stable China-U.S. Ties, Cooperation and Avoidance of Conflict
Chinese President Xi Jinping called on China and the United States to strengthen communication, expand cooperation and avoid confrontation, during a welcome ceremony hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday.
Speaking during his state visit to the United States, Xi said the two countries should work toward a “constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability,” referring to an understanding reached with Trump during the U.S. president’s visit to China earlier this year.
Xi outlined three priorities for bilateral relations: strengthening communication, cooperating with sincerity and coexisting peacefully.
He said the two countries should maintain candid and sustained dialogue, increase contacts between government departments and legislative bodies, and build mutual trust while managing their differences.
On economic cooperation, Xi said China and the United States have deeply intertwined interests and significant room for cooperation. He welcomed American companies to invest and operate in China and called for fair treatment of Chinese companies in the United States.
Xi also highlighted potential cooperation in artificial intelligence, counternarcotics, law enforcement and transportation, including increasing direct flights between the two countries.
“China and the United States, as two major countries, stand to gain from cooperation and will both lose in confrontation,” Xi said, adding that competition should remain “healthy” and within limits.
He called for the two militaries to maintain regular dialogue and improve mechanisms for crisis communication and prevention, saying the so-called “Thucydides Trap” could be overcome.
Xi also announced an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China for exchanges and study over the next five years.
Recalling the cooperation between Chinese and American forces during World War II, Xi said the future of bilateral relations depended on the two countries’ peoples, particularly younger generations.
He also announced that two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, would soon arrive at Zoo Atlanta as part of continued people-to-people exchanges.
“Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand,” Xi said, calling for continued efforts to advance friendship between the Chinese and American peoples and build a better world.
