TIRANA – There are neither secret agreements nor plans for the partition of Kosovo, has said Albania’s acting Foreign Minister Gent Cakaj after a meeting with a senior US diplomat in Washington DC.
A press release issued by the foreign ministry informed that Cakaj was received at the White House in Washington on Friday by the Special Envoy of President Trump on the Peace Negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo, Ambassador Richard Grenell.
Cakaj was scheduled to be in Washington on the occasion of an expected meeting between senior representatives of Kosovo and Serbia to be held on June 27 which failed as Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci was indicted by a special prosecutor for crimes against humanity and war crimes on June 24. Thaci cancelled the trip returning to Pristina and even PM Hoti said he could not attend the meeting.
The discussion between Grenell and Cakaj focused on the importance of a lasting agreement between Kosovo and Serbia and the promotion of economic development in the Western Balkans, said the press release.
“For clarification: There are no secret agreements, no plans for partition of the Republic of Kosovo, no haste for any harmful agreement, but efforts to promote economic development and strengthen the people of the Republic of Kosovo internationally with the support of the United States of America,” Cakaj was quoted as saying in his comment on the meeting.
In addition Cakaj said that Albania will continue its unsparing support for Kosovo despite the challenges. /argumentum.al
