TIRANA – The ruling Socialist Party (SP) has formally said it will respond on Tuesday to the proposal of the opposition Democratic Party (DP) on the full opening of the electoral lists, provided that the coalition formula and the current scheme for calculating the mandates are not changed.
But, unofficially, an idea of what the position of the Socialists will be in the next meeting of the Political Council was given by the Prime Minister, Edi Rama, who addressed both the DP and President Ilir Meta between the lines, but also guaranteeing the parliamentary opposition, that he will not touch the pact signed with them on June 5 this year.
“I repeat the appeal for the DP not to get tired of opposing July 30. July 30 is over! It is a signed agreement, it is a closed matter! The President has no right to constitutional changes, nor is he required to have an opinion on July 30. He just has to accept it, as if everyone will accept it. As in ’98, the Constitution will be recognized and subject to the July 30 constitutional amendments by all,” said Rama on Monday. “July 30 does not move!”
Apparently the Prime Minister has been flexible in terms of how much the lists will be ‘opened’, but not as far as the formula of coalitions is concerned.
“The opening of the lists can definitely be 100%. Coalitions? No, we will not deny the right to gather in a tent, but we will sanction it. The lists will be opened and coalitions will be built as everywhere in Europe,” said Rama, who is also head of the SP, the largest ruling party in Albania. /argumentum.al
