TIRANA – The head of the Democratic Party (DP), Lulzim Basha discussed with President Ilir Meta the latest political developments in Albania on Wednesday.
The main topic of the meeting was the act of PM Edi Rama to break the political agreement on the electoral reform mediated by the US, the EU and the UK which was signed on June 5 this year.
“It is an agreement that brought the normalization of the political climate in the country to pave the way for elections with a somewhat normal climate,” Basha is quoted as saying by DP press office.
“As I have told you, we have no illusions that the June 5 agreement meets the criteria for free and fair elections. We know, even from the experience of 2017 and previous experiences, that the problem was not the law, but the implementation of the law. This is the source of our unchanged demand for a caretaker government for the elections,” DP head told the President.
According to the DP announcement, the opposition leader shared with Meta the concern that the outgoing Prime Minister’s acts for the unilateral amendment of the Constitution are leading Albania towards a second isolation.
Referring to the current situation as the first isolation due to the failure of the government to manage the pandemic, Basha said that the second isolation is a bill that Edi Rama wants to charge Albanians permanently just because he fears elections.
Albania will hold general elections in 2021.
For his part President Meta asked Basha to abide by the June 5 accord regardless of the unhopeful efforts made to violate the Constitution.
“Whoever works against the European future of the country will hold individual and direct responsibility,” Meta was quoted as saying during the meeting with Basha by the presidential press office. /argumentum.al
