TIRANA, June 21 – Prime Minister Edi Rama stated in a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin during her visit to Albania on Tuesday that Albania and Finland are on a front together.
According to him, Finland has a lot to show to Albania and knows very well the aggressor and its nature as a country that had a history with Russia in the past. Rama said that she showed how important is the resistance and the connection between what is happening in Ukraine and that it can reach Albania. “In this context, the Balkans is a weak link, so Finland’s word is very important for the whole community,” Rama said.
Further he said they talked about what is coming or not coming in the next few days – the official opening of accession talks of Albania and North Macedonia with the European Union.
“I told the prime minister that I do not expect anything new from the Council, however EU countries are trying with Bulgaria and for that we are very grateful,” Rama said.
“On the other hand, we wholeheartedly support the NATO membership of Sweden and Finland, which are in every way an added value to the alliance. We feel privileged to be given the opportunity to do something for Finland that is not small,” said the Albanian head of government.
The Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, stated that Finland’s priority is for the EU to start the membership negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania without any delay.
“Both Albania and Finland are active and constructive as members of the international community. Albania and Finland already have a very good relationship that dates back to 1956, when Europe looked different,” she said.
“Russia’s aggression on Ukraine has changed our entire security environment for generations. Finland and Sweden have submitted a request for membership in NATO where Albania is an important and active member,” said Marin.
