Editor’s take
TIRANA, August 16 – Albania’s leadership has apparently not been enthusiastic to the proposal on a joint defense treaty submitted by the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani to the new head of state of official Tirana, Bajram Begaj.
Begaj had to wait for advice from the head of government, Edi Rama because his answer to his counterpart was made at the end of his two-day visit to ‘fraternal’ Kosovo in an interview with RTK on Tuesday. The answer to the question on the proposal made on Monday morning is as follows:”(The Defense Treaty) is an initial idea that must be handled carefully by the relevant institutions. I understand President Osmani and I will work intensively to advance this treaty based on the legal framework, but I think that the respective assemblies will be the ones which have to decide.”I think that in the current security conditions, giving this opinion requires more the idea that the support of the Republic of Albania should be necessary in such moments.
I have said that Albania will always be a contributor to the security of Kosovo, and the presence of KFOR in Kosovo is an added guarantee for security in the region.”Regarding the ‘Open Balkans’ initiative, the answer of Begaj was lost in words being aware that Kosovo is against it.But the answer can be summed up in what the president said in conclusion of his interview: “Any initiative that basically has economic benefits and the well-being of the people is welcome.”
