TIRANA – The mandates of 120 deputies of the tenth parliamentary structure elected in the July 15 snap general elections were verified after the proposal of the Verification Committee in Parliament’s constitutive session in North Macedonia on Tuesday.
The Chairwoman of the Verification Committee, Jagoda Shahpaska said the Commission found no grounds on which the election of 120 deputies could be disputed.
The constitutive session of the new Parliament took place in the Big Dome hall in line with health protocols for the protections against the spread of COVID-19.
The outgoing Speaker, Talat Xhaferi, who presided over the session, said the current government will remain in office until the new one is composed.
Xhaferi will also stay in office until a new Speaker is elected, and according to regulations the Speaker’s office belongs to the parties that will secure a majority to form a government. As a matter of fact this process started on Tuesday.
In the July early elections SDSM won 46 seats, VMRO-DPMNE – 44, DUI- 15, Alliance for Albanians/Alternative-12, Levica- 2 and DPA-1.
“Starting today are entering negotiations on a new four-term, full mandate of a stable majority in Parliament, a majority that should secure a stable and dedicated four-year government committed to hard work,” said SDSM leader Zoran Zaev as quoted by MIA news agency on Tuesday.
Zaev was convinced in the success of the future government in times when North Macedonia does not have an open issue with Greece and Bulgaria and in the country. “We have settled the major issues that pushed us back in the past,” he said.
In the meantime DUI leader Ali Ahmeti said after the constitutive session of Parliament that negotiations on the formation of the new government could begin but there is nothing concrete for the time being.
‘It will be early to talk about expectations,” Ahmeti told Alsat-M TV.
VMRO-DPMNE leader Mickovski expected to try and secure a parliamentary majority adding that his party would intensify meetings with political parties not only with those of the Albanian bloc but also with the SDSM-led coalition.
“Maybe they will recognize VMRO-DPME’s reform agenda and support it,” he said./argumentum.al
