TIRANA, May 18 – “The Special Prosecution has been fully focused on the fight against organized crime and the full and comprehensive investigation of criminal offenses in the field of corruption, especially at high levels during 2021 and the first quarter of 2022,” has said the head of the Special Anti-Corruption Structure, SPAK, Arben Kraja.
Kraja reported to the National Council for European Integration which held the meeting on Wednesday
In his speech in response to the request of the chairwoman of the council, Jorida Tabaku regarding the investigation into incinerators, the head of SPAK, Arben Kraja said that due to legal restrictions he would not give any reason for concrete issues and also no opinion on the institutions of others.
In his report, Kraja said that the SPAK is involved in implementing the recommendations of the Council as far as the competence of the institution is concerned.
“During this year, successful investigations have been conducted and continue to be conducted, and entities that have exercised high state functions such as judges, prosecutors, and structured criminal groups are being judged,” he said.
Regarding the recommendations, Kraja added that SPAK focuses on the recommendations in function of the institution. “We have cooperated closely with law enforcement structures inside and outside the country. We have cooperated with counterpart institutions. Today 95% of investigations are proactive,” he said.
Kraja stressed that 282 criminal proceedings are under investigation with 131 persons for criminal offenses of corruption such as false statements of officials and corruption in the field of elections. 11 criminal proceedings with 36 defendants were probed in the last four months.
SPAk and Kraja kimself have been the target of a series of accusations by PM Edi Rama, who has harshly accused the anticorruption authority of not investigating former PM Sali Berisha and President Ilir Meta.
