TIRANA – As Albania gets ready for an overall opening up starting on June 1 the upward trend of coronavirus cases continues which is evidenced by Thursday’s medical bulletin.
Some 26 new cases were confirmed during the last 24 hours bringing the total number of the infected people to 1076, said specialist at the Public Health Institute, Rovena Daja on Thursday.
“Tirana continues to be the main hotspot in the country with a high number of daily coronavirus cases,” she said adding that all other areas of the country have had no new cases for the second day in a row. “During the last 24 hours, 225 citizens were tested as suspects affected by Covid-19 and 26 positive cases were confirmed, all of them in Tirana.”
Daja explained that all new cases belong to Tirana district, while 12 of them being medical staff and 8 patients of the University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa” (QSUT), which turned into a hotspot as a nurse got infected outside the hospital and transmitted the novel virus to colleagues and patients.
Daja informed that there are 24 hospitalized patients, 3 of them in intensive care and 11 persons recovered during the past 24 hours.
According to the specialist, since the beginning of the epidemic on March 9 this year, over 15,000 molecular and serological tests have been performed, while the number of confirmed positive cases across the country is 1,076. Of these, over 76% have recovered. There are currently 220 active coronavirus cases in Albania, mainly in Tirana, Durres and Kruja.
Specialists continue the effort to raise the awareness of the people that the virus is present and despite the lifting of the restrictions it is up to citizens to be attentive and careful. They said in Wednesday’s talk shows on different local TVs that the new cases are not worrisome, but if the trend continues then there is the risk of taking some new precautions. /argumentum.al
